Area residents soon will get to see a local restaurant owner’s appearance on the national TV show Judge Judy.
Doug Holiday, owner of Bigg’s BBQ, said he’s been notified that his appearance on the show will be broadcast on Thursday.
Holiday last summer brought a small claims court case against a 20-year old after Bigg’s got fined $500 for serving the minor a beer. The minor used a fake ID to buy the beer.
Holiday brought the case after learning that the minor ended up striking a plea deal with the city prosecutor’s office, and ended up paying less than Holiday’s business did for the offense. The case ended up drawing the attention of the producers of Judge Judy.
Holiday is hosting a special watch party at 4 p.m. Thursday at Bigg’s, 2429 Iowa. The event will include a special fake ID amnesty program. Holiday will give anyone turning in their fake ID a $10 gift certificate. Holiday then will destroy the fake IDs, not turn them into the police — or Judge Judy.
The event also will feature a Judge Judy look-alike contest.
The show airs at 4 p.m. on WDAF TV, which is channel 4 on Sunflower Broadband. The show also airs at 11 a.m. on KTKA TV, which is channel 12 on Sunflower.

Fake IDs can look so incredibly real now. It's ridiculous that the person who uses the fake ID is punished less than the business owner who fails to catch him/her.

They usually aren't very lenient on the business owner. The minor using the fake ID however usually gets off with a slap on the wrist.
Which is why it is always so surprising to me that the restaurants and bars around here card so poorly. Enforcement is obviously very poor because if you do get caught the punishment is quite harsh. An expansion of officers out and about would probably help the situation a ton.

Good thing this was in Lawrence, they got off cheap. times ten in OP, plus fines for the bartender who served the drink and losing their license to serve in KS for two years. Probably happened here as well I would think?

If the bartender carded the guy, and it was a legit I.D. then how do they get in trouble?
It is not their job to distinguish between real and fake. Their job is to card. If they did that, I don't know how they got in trouble.

Vinny - it is their job to check the ID's to make sure they aren't fake. There are simple card readers any restaurant or bar owner can purchase that they scan the card through (just like a credit card reader) and if it is a legit ID, the reader will show the name and address of the person on the ID. That's why there's a magnetic strip on the back of your license. If someone is trying to use another person's license, it's the job of the bartender to make sure that license is theirs. Not too many people look identical to other people and they can always ask for a second form of ID.

Maybe you don't know, but they make fake I.D's that scan. So there goes that argument.
When you have some time, take a look at someone's I.D., and look at them. Especially younger people. The I.D.'s are often a couple years old and people change a lot. Hair style, length, color, facial hair, build, weight. They have colored contacts you can wear.
Maybe its different here, but when I bartended in Minnesota, the guy with the police that came in and talked to us about ID checks told us this -
If you actually check them, and the ID looks legit, and the person looks enough like the ID, you, as a server or as an establishment, can not get in trouble. We were told it was not our job to decipher the difference between real and fake. If we tried, that was good enough.

Most magnetic strips on the back of the ID's don't work, due to taking them in and out of your wallet, magnetic money clips, etc... And some states still don't have magnetic strips, so what do you do there?
If you don't think a college student with todays technology cannot reproduce an ID and program the magnetic strip, then you don't understand the problem bars face.
